“Maybe i’m dreamer, but i can dream high” – Hey Universe
Come stai?
Come hai vissuto quel particolare periodo?

“Maybe i’m dreamer, but i can dream high” – Hey Universe
I came across the music of Licia Missori going to a concert that wasn't hers. The date is May 4, 2019, a lifetime ago if you think about what happened later in the world, and on the small stage of the Wishlist in Rome they were preparing to go up as a "headliner" Rachael Yamagata and Tracy Bonham . Licia, together with Francesca Naccarelli , were the ones who would inaugurate the splendid and exciting evening to which I would later dedicate an extensive written and photographic reportage. Since then, as always happens when I come across an artist who makes the inner strings of my soul vibrate in unison with hers, I have slowly approached the figure of this young Roman pianist and composer. " Nostalgia for the future ", released at the end of 2021, is a refined album that speaks to the faces, often frightened and eager to find the light, which are increasingly hidden by the countless masks that the society of consumption dictates. I reached Licia by phone for a chat about her artistic “universe” and how this latest record was born.
Hi Licia, welcome to Extra! Music Magazine. It is really a pleasure to be able to chat with you. How are you?
Well thank you, despite the somewhat limited period in terms of concerts, I can't complain.
I wanted to start this interview by digging a bit into what your life and artistic journey has been. Before getting to have "Nostalgia for the future", how your passion for music was born and what were the fundamental stages, other projects and professional goals that characterized your training and growth as a musician and composer .
Get ready to write a book! (laughs ed) Joking aside, I started composing when I was a child, spontaneously, and then I gave birth to my first album in 2002, when I was still a child. This year will be the twentieth anniversary of my first album, it seems impossible to me if I think about it. I then released another album in 2003, and to follow in 2009 and 2015, until today with "Nostalgia del futuro", the fifth album of my solo journey. Over time I have also collaborated with various bands going to touch a bit of all musical genres and doing a bit of "tour life". I did several things in the theater, even with Giancarlo Giannini. As for my passion for music, let's say it was born with me. As soon as I had enough cognitive functions to be able to play a pianola, I started. From there I have never stopped.
We can therefore say that music has always been inseparable from your person .
Yes, totally. There was this Bontempi piano abandoned by my brother (older than me) who was not far away, and when I found it in front of me I began to play. I did it all day, all the time. There is also a video on Youtube of me at the age of 4 playing some songs for children on this piano, and already from there you can see that I was obsessed.
Looking at the artwork of this work, the cover catches the eye for its apparent simplicity. I was struck by observing, on the image of planet earth that you hold in your hands, some clock hands. How did you curate the "visual" part of "Nostalgia for the future"?
The idea of the cover was very "strong" for me. I visualized this image of me embracing the world, as if somehow I was going to take care of it. However, the world also represents time and the future, which is precisely the theme of the record, and so I wanted to actually embrace a globe that was a clock.
The rest of the artwork is a direct expression of what is inside the disc. I was lucky to find a person who understood what I meant, and then aesthetically came to realize everything as it should be. I wanted to create a very "conceptual" cover, an image that at first glance made it clear what the message was.
Indeed, even the images inside the booklet find a reference in the album texts .
Absolutely, in fact this is what unfortunately is lost with digital and streaming services. For this I really appreciate you bought the cd to get a more complete look.
Yes, it is something that I think is very important to really "understand" a record work. This type of support is essential for an artist to survive, especially when it is his only source of income .
I'm like that too, there are few left to buy the CDs but let's not give up! (laughs ed). In addition to the economic factor (which you fortunately understand when many do not care at all), there is also a big difference in terms of use. Having a physical object in your hands gives a whole other value to the work.
In your case then you have also inserted something more, such as the pin, the magnet and the sheet with the written information on how to approach listening, and this brings us back to what was said a little while ago, that is listening to a record, or a vinyl, is an extraordinary and “necessary” experience to fully experience an album .
Exactly, whoever listens to a simple file is going to miss all this.
If I'm not mistaken "Nostalgia for the future" was not present until now on Spotify ..
Now it is also present there, there was a problem with the distributor and even though the album was released on 10 December it has only been online, even on Youtube, for a week.
In the notes accompanying "Nostalgia for the future" it is written about how this album was born during the interminable days of the lockdown. How did you experience that particular period? Do you think the record would have been different if it had been born in a more "normal" context?
Look, the album wouldn't have been born honestly, at least not this one. It was in fact a consequence of the energy disturbance that occurred due to the lockdown, an event that practically locked me inside my room for two months. I was completely alone and in the first phase I tried to realize what the positive aspects of the matter were and to help others. I was doing live on Instagram in an attempt to keep people company, imagining that if I was sick, surely the same thing happened to many others. It was a nice experience. At a certain point, however, I really "collapsed". After a couple of months so I had to necessarily retire to write something new. On an energetic level, I was really upset by the situation. Before, I had a very intense and unpredictable life as I was constantly around, playing in various places and seeing lots of people. So finding myself suddenly stopped, not being able to think about the future and imagine an "after", was shocking.
It was an unprecedented situation for anyone in fact .
Yes, there is a before and an after, it was a real watershed. "Nostalgia for the future" also refers to this, to the fact that I suddenly realized how important it was to be able to think about the future. Indeed, it made me understand how much it is also something to do with joy. The fact of being able to think about tomorrow should not be taken for granted.
In a way, this record is a love letter to the future.
The 13 songs that make up this new work of yours paint a magical, melancholy and at the same time vibrant and vital fresco, accompanying the listener on a journey to discover the countless worlds that float within your soul. They help him in a certain sense to "look inside", both in the songs that have a text, such as Hyper empathy or Hey Universe (two of my favorite songs), and in the entirely instrumental ones. I would therefore like to understand better which thoughts, dreams, fears gave life to these traces .
The songs were mostly born from the things I wanted and couldn't have at the time. For example, what frightened me most was not the lockdown, but the change of perspective. Things we didn't even think about before were suddenly gone. Things we have always taken for granted, such as the passage of time, knowing what I do in two months. It is as if everything had become very important and I began to "feel" four times more than before. Hyper empathy, for example, is a song that talks about this change of perspective, where you suddenly feel the value of things very strongly, until you are almost overwhelmed by them. But this also gives meaning to your life, because you realize that there are things that have a great importance and are worth being in the world for them. As far as Hey Universe is concerned, the speech is similar. It is a piece that talks about how this experience has fundamentally made me find the meaning of my life: to achieve all the good I am capable of, both towards myself and towards others. It is something that I did not have clear inside of before. There were music, friends, "beautiful" things, but I didn't feel I had a purpose in life.
We can say that this whole situation has, despite everything, revealed that it has a hidden positive side .
In the long run, I think so. On a spiritual level it was a very powerful evolution. It would be interesting to rewind the tape to get a glimpse of what it would have been like if the pandemic hadn't happened, a bit like in the movie “Sliding Doors”. I have certainly drawn something very positive from this experience. I don't know if it would have been better if it had gone differently, at a very deep psychological level I also acquired extremely strong motivations that I certainly didn't have before.
Do you have any tracks that you are particularly attached to?
It is the first time that I am really happy with the final result as a whole, even though I am a very perfectionist person and very critical of myself. All the lyrics are exactly what I meant and I can't put them in any order of preference.
These are words, those of the songs contained in this album, in which I reflect a lot .
I'm really happy with it. I did this experiment of making instrumental pieces alternating with others sung, even though I didn't know if it would work. But that was what I wanted to say the way I wanted it, so I just did it, and was very happy with the result. On my part, there was an aesthetic search for odd times, trying not to make it understood, in order to create a fluidity that had a slightly fresher, more "new" rhythmic scan for the listener's ears. I "vibrate" along with this record every time I listen to it and I am immensely happy with it.
In one of your posts recently published on social networks, you wrote about how society imposes a certain roadmap today. More work, more money and social prestige, up to the formation of one's own family unit and finally to the restart of the entire process, indefinitely. I wanted to ask you for further information on this reflection of yours .
Also during the lockdown, I realized that society tends to give value to something that it does not actually have, such as power, status symbol, career as an end in itself. On the contrary, no importance is given to what really possesses virtues, and unfortunately we have also seen this on a very practical level in reference to art, culture, research. This happens in our country in particular, even if it is a widespread trend almost everywhere. A system that is based only on profit, to the detriment of fundamental values, then obviously produces this consequence. The criticism that you hear in the record, but which is also the background to my private life since it is something I firmly believe in, is that of giving honor to what makes existence worth living: being yourself and being in solidarity. with others and don't look at the balance on your account or the type of work done. I don't think the latter are useless aspects, they certainly have a usefulness, but they cannot be the only yardstick to evaluate a person's life.
I think it is common in today's consumer society a lack of empathy combined with arrogance that then makes many people, young and old, something perhaps very different from a human being .
Yes, there is a lack of kindness, something that may seem trivial at least as long as we are still children. At that moment we are still pure, clear, we see the good in the other. Then at a certain point we grow up and become adults, fueling this disillusionment that ultimately leads us to no longer trust others and to see evil even where it is not there. We become selfish and this is alienating, I think it is the denial of who we are as human beings.
What do you think could be a way out of this vicious circle?
I am convinced that some people manage, on their own, to find a way out.
To make it happen collectively, I think we need to change the "system", the paradigm of what is meant by power. Those in senior and leadership roles should give importance to other things. Unfortunately now, although I hope that positive change will be reached as soon as possible, we are still in a very conflictual phase. The new generations are beginning to perceive this cognitive dissonance, to separate between what is valued by society and what it would be desirable to actually be. Those in power are still right as they were in the 1900s, fueling this struggle between what is new and what should be the old, but it still isn't.
Imagine yourself 15-20 years from now, could the Nostalgia for the future you tell in this album you fear be studded with some too many remorse? Basically, do you believe that the Licia Missori of tomorrow will look at her past with a more melancholy but happy look, or do you fear the unexpected, the empty and dark dead ends in which life often leads us and which then perhaps lead to bewilderment?
I'm not afraid of dark times, I'm sure there will be. I learned how there is no eternal way out, of the type "now I have overcome this thing and it will never happen to me again", but I hope to never lose that star that guides me every day and makes me think that "it is worth it. penalty ". My presence here can make sense for others, for myself, and I hope to never lose this motivation. Looking back I would therefore like to have accomplished everything I "could" do just to try not to have regrets of any kind.
Thinking about a closer tomorrow, what are your next projects?
I have many in reality, including a new album written before Nostalgia for the future and outclassed in order of publication since the latter was too urgent an album, closely linked to the situation we have lived / are experiencing. I should also make a classical music album.
Then I have a lot of other things in the pipeline: music for video games, a new university enrollment ... So many projects that I struggle to define with certainty given the current period in which we live not "per day" but "per month". Certainly I will not stand still being a person always in turmoil, therefore, if you and my little "tribe" continue to follow me, I will certainly have something to give.
What can you tell me about new concerts?
I will do a date in France with my trio, named Neverflowers, in February. In April, however, there will be a concert in Rome, in the theater, and I hope you can be there, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my first album and of course also play the new songs.
What book is there now on your nightstand?
I am reading various things, including "Shambhala - The sacred way of the warrior", a book that talks about the spiritual principles of Tibet, values that should guide a person's life to be happy. I'm interested right now in keeping my inner life "clean", since the outer one is a bit sparse (laughs). Other readings from this period are the biography of Cristina Di Belgioioso entitled "The princess of the north" and written by Arrigo Petacco, a very beautiful book that talks about this very interesting historical figure who actually had a very important role in the Italian Risorgimento, but who, like all female characters, was also very neglected. A different volume from the previous one but equally fascinating.
b> The last question I would like to ask you is: what role does religion play in your life?
I do not practice it and indeed I also tend to oppose it enough, since I believe it is a set of rules based on traditions that are thousands of years old. They do not interest me as such even if I think we can still find something valid and current in them. I certainly have a very developed spiritual side (I spend a lot of my time looking inside myself, understanding what is right or wrong and observing the same in others, trying to help them), something which, however, is very far from the set of rituals and rules I mentioned. We should refresh this idea of spirituality because eliminating it altogether would be wrong. Today there is this idea of religion as something old, outdated, and the only viable alternative would be to turn to materialism. I believe that religion has always existed to respond to a human need that still exists. It is something that still needs an "answer" and therefore I see spirituality as something to be cultivated but in a "new" way, close to how today's world is and moving away from the specter of what instead appears as a "capitalism of the spirit ".
Thank you for your time and for your words Licia.
