It's been two years since I bumped into the Pinski by chance in the Spotify advice section. It was one of those dazzling discoveries where there's always a thrill to come, that sneaky little thrill that takes you to realise you've found something amazing.
A surprisingly mature debut album, both in terms of its purely musical aspect and its themes. Nature, consumerism, the fragility of a species constantly trying to destroy itself and the ecosystem in which it lives, all topics that Insa Reichwein, singer and leader of Pinski, told me (in the previous interview you can always find on Extra! Music Magazine) to be an expression of her coherence and of her willingness to deeply touch listeners with non-trivial themes.
It was not long after that interesting chat that the record I had bought from their website arrived at my home, with a beautiful dedication from Insa herself. And then, suddenly, in October 2020, when, while browsing on Youtube, I came across the video of Troubleseeker, the first single extracted from the ep "we all stole from the appletree" to be released next November 27th. Destiny wants Insa herself to contact me again immediately afterwards, sending me the entire ep to hear what I thought about it, something for which I thank her with all my heart.
It's always nice to come back and talk to such sincere and sensitive artists, and soon my review will also come here on Extra. In the meantime, I took the opportunity to talk to you about this new work by Pinski.
Hello Insa and welcome back on Extra! Music Magazine. It's been a couple of years since we last met and first of all I wanted to ask you what happened in this time with Pinski, and then how you faced the birth and evolution of this pandemic from an artistic and personal point of view.
Hi Rossi, I’m happy to be here :) Well, since the release of ‚Sound The Alarm‘ in 2018 we have supported bigger acts, played really nice festivals and went on tour in Germany. Of course, all of this stopped in 2020.. for me, it was quite depressing and honestly, I didn’t write any songs for a couple of months - that didn’t happen since I began writing at the age of 10! So I was in a pretty bad state of mind…but eventually, I dragged myself out and we started to rehearse again and the whole band was just super happy to play and make music together. Also, the prospect of finally releasing the new EP which we started to work on in 2019 elevated my spirit and brought me back on track. Corona is still there, but I don’t really care anymore as I am once more reunited with my music.
The ep contains 4 very different tracks but equally involving both from a musical and lyrical point of view. A perfect example of this is Troubleseeker and his video which seems not to represent a real experience, but to be almost a metaphor of an external conflictual relationship which then becomes, in one's mind, the place where the events shown take place. How did the idea for this video come about and what is the meaning of this piece?
We had sooo many ideas for the ‚Troubleseeker‘ video but just couldn’t realise them because we were either lacking the money or the right connections to the film industry. So what we needed was a cheap video that still looked professional with an exceptional idea. Hard to find! But my friend and camera man Carsten Jost (grandjost Production) finally had the brilliant inspiration of building a cell in lunatic asylum right in his backyard. Everyone of the band had a go in there, it was hilarious…of course it’a all a metaphor for wanting to break out of your mundane, dull life and finally be who your really are - even if that self is completely out of control and crazy.
Even the other pieces, Dark, Questions and Appletree, seem to speak of contrasting moods and a constant struggle to resist the darkness of society that then spreads even in interpersonal relationships. How were these songs born?
DARK is actually an older song which I rediscovered while going through my unfinished material. It was written in time when I couldn’t really feel who I was anymore. The first part is build around that forlornness, but then second part is actually full of hope and represents the way back. It it my favourite song on the EP :) ‚Questions‘ and ‚Appletree‘ obviously deal with our destructive way of life. Often I find myself very angry at politics or society and just go and write it all down. They are quite straight forward if you read or listen to the lyrics.
What's in Pinski's future, both in the recording and live field, given the uncertain situation generated by Covid-19?
Well, currently I am working in the studio on my next EP which is actually a follow up on ‚we all stole from the appletree’ and I am very excited to announce that there will be some surprises on that one :) So the motivation is pretty high at the moment! Also, we’re going to shoot more crazy videos, that’s a lot of fun, too. And of course, we’ll be rehearsing the new songs until we’re allowed to rock live again.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some of my questions again Insa, I hope as soon as possible to live your music and tenacity. See you soon!
Yeah, thanks! Have a great day Rossi.
