- VERSIONE ITALIANA IN BASSO -
November 13th is the release date of your new solo studio project called Lunatic Soul, and its title is Through Shaded Woods. It is a very introspective work that digs deep into your roots and your childhood memories. What exactly does this mean for you?
I come from a small town in the north east of Poland, which is full of lakes and forests. I was raised by nature until I was 25 that I moved to a big city, where my adventure with Riverside began. When I knew that the new Lunatic Soul album will have a green/forest cover I probably subconsciously wanted to go back to my childhood. "Through Shaded Woods" talks about getting a second chance, about overcoming darkness. In my case, it was a long process but the greenness of the forest made me want to breathe again. I think that the album could help all those people who feel insecure in the present times, who need a cathartic cleansing, peace and serenity.
Who are the musicians you listen to most often and who inspire your work?
I listen to a lot of instrumental and ambient music these days, catch up on the classic albums and check from time to time what my musical colleagues and friends have to say on their recent albums. When it comes to Lunatic Soul - one of my top three important bands is Dead Can Dance. I have always also liked Clannad and Irish music. On top of that, I was very much influenced by the first Mike Oldfield albums, especially "Tubular Bells" and "Ommadawn", as well as Peter Gabriel and his "Passion", and then in the 90s, I discovered Scandinavian folk by bands like Hedningarna and Garmarna, which really caught my attention because of their primal rhythms, trance and a lot of rock.
It is thanks to all those artists that I created Lunatic Soul in 2008 - I wanted to play exactly this kind of music. But apart from composing single tracks of this kind on the previous releases, I could not make one whole record which would sound exactly like that. Until now."Through Shaded Woods" finally sounds like the Lunatic Soul I had always wanted.
(By the way, I made a special playlist on Spotify with all LS inspirations. You can check it here: https://spoti.fi/3k2Re1o)
The “lockdown period” was very productive for you: a project with your name, an introspective album like this, and the work with Riverside. How did you manage it all?
Well, I guess I am much more organised in my music life than in my pride life (laugh). Mostly I have just used the fact that I had more time without Riverside. After the tour in march 2020, that we had to cancel at the end, we gave ourselves more time to focus on our private projects. So I used the time I had and simply made more solo things than I usually do. We have „The Song of a Dying Memory”, „Are You ready For The Sun”, „Lockdown Spaces” and the new Lunatic Soul. Life without Riverside can be beautiful as well (laugh).
The music scene has been hit hard because of this pandemic. Very few concerts, few albums released, a lot of streaming music. What do you want for the future as a musician?
I have a lot of opportunities. I proved that this year. But the very next year I want to return to Riverside, to our rehearsal room and focus on the next album in a team work. I guess it will help us to overcome all the 2021 inconveniences.
Your work has taken you all over the world. What do you prefer, traveling around and playing in different cities or sitting in your studio to compose and record?
This time I prefer sitting in the studio to compose and record. But it will change soon I believe. I really miss the fact we couldn’t come with the band to Italy during the final leg of Wasteland tour. You are such a wonderful people, I still remember our last show in Rome which was magnificant and we miss you a lot. I hope that you will like the new Lunatic Soul album. It’s full of good and positive vibrations and lots of hope for the future. I wish peace and serenity on everyone.

Fino a oggi.
Abbiamo The Song of a Dying Memory, Are You ready For The Sun, Lockdown Spaces e il nuovo album del progetto Lunatic Soul.
Auguro pace e serenità a tutti!
